Research Highlights
Our surgeons are pursuing several lines of focused surgical research, including:
- participation in clinical trials of medications to improve post-operative recovery by accelerating the return of bowel motility
- new methods of performing intestinal surgery through scopes placed inside natural orifices (known as NOTES), a revolutionary paradigm shift for surgeons that will offer patients a speedier recovery with more positive outcomes. NOTES is a natural evolution from laparoscopic surgical techniques, many of which were pioneered by our surgeons
- Evaluating intestinal function in Crohn's disease after strictureplasty
- new devices to successfully and securely join the intestines at the anastomotic site to prevent the complication of leakage following surgery
- participation with a group of multiple specialists, including basic scientists, on creating high quality images using miniature cameras and multi-photon imaging which can visualize diseases at the microscopic level in the intestinal lining in order to visualize both normal and abnormal cells
- collaboration with technology companies to develop the next generation of laparoscopic tools and techniques
- investigations of methods to preserve the body's immune function following major open surgery to fight infections and prevent tumor recurrence and methods for countering physiologic changes at the time of surgery in order to optimize a patient's outcome
- evaluating the role of increased magnification capabilities in laparoscopic treatment of rectal cancers to help identify nerves to preserve sexual and bladder function
- short-term outcomes of laparoscopic surgery for colo-rectal cancer in octagenarians
- segmental colectomy for benign and malignant conditions
