Research Highlights
The Division of Plastic Surgery has an active research laboratory, which is currently investigating:
- application of gene therapy and tissue engineering in wound healing, bone and cartilage repair and reconstruction of three-dimensional defects
- use of stem cells for tissue regeneration
- use of acellular dermis for soft tissue repair and enhancement
- use of various bone substitutes to expedite bone healing
- effects of ultrasound energy on wound healing and the use of novel skin substitutes for open wounds
- manipulation and management of hemangiomas and vascular malformation
- treatments of keloids and other abnormal scar conditions
- treatment of patients undergoing breast reconstruction after radiation therapy, as well as advances in sternal reconstruction after postoperative infection or wound reopening
- silicone breast implants
- use of absorbable plates as a scaffold for a hydroxyapatite resin bone paste to reconstruct large cranial defects
- mechanical stress and bone biology
