Needing an organ transplant can be an overwhelming and confusing time in your life. Choosing a transplant center is one of the most important choices that you will face.

There are many factors to consider including:

  • Personal preference
  • Physician preference
  • Location of transplant center
  • Input from family, friends, and acquaintances
  • Number and types of transplants performed and outcomes (patient and graft survival, acute rejection rates) at the transplant centers you are considering
  • Your insurance company's preferred transplant centers
  • Availability of housing, international services, support groups, and other services

We hope the information contained within our website can assist you in making this important decision. Please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to answer any questions that you may have as you review this information.

Transferring Your Waiting Time

It is important to know that you have the right to transfer your transplant care and the waiting time that you have accumulated from one transplant center to another. If you choose to transfer your time, you do not lose any of the time that you have already accumulated. Therefore, you can periodically re-assess your decision on where to be listed based on the factors mentioned above. If you would like to read more about transferring your waiting time, download the United Network for Organ Sharing document on multiple listing and waiting time transfer.

Listing at More Than One Transplant Center

It is possible for you to be on more than one transplant center's waiting list (called multiple listing or multi-listing), however, you can only be listed at one transplant center per geographic region according to New York State law.

View the different geographic regions used in allocating transplants.

If you would like to read more about multiple listing, download the United Network for Organ Sharing document on multiple listing and waiting time transfer.
