Dental Student Externships and Undergraduate (College) Externships
The Division of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery welcomes current American and Canadian dental school or college students to extern with us. We request a minimum of one week for any externship; we try to limit the program to no more than 2 externs at any time.Externs are part of the oral and maxillofacial surgery and general practice dentistry team; outpatients, inpatients, operating room, emergency department, etc. One and two week externs will observe, but not actively assist. Three weeks and longer externs have the option of becoming an active participant (histories, exams, assisting, etc.) if their school will extend (in writing) their malpractice coverage while they are here, and they complete the hospita's volunteer application and criteria; current college students would only need to complete the hospital's volunteer component.
The externship application is a letter or e-mail to Dr. Behrman at dabehrm@med.cornell.edu discussing possible visit dates, a current CV, a Dean's letter stating that you are a student in good standing, and the malpractice letter if applicable. Unfortunately we do not have housing available, and students are required to make their own housing arrangements.
