Burn Center
Burn Center patients receive comprehensive treatment for the three phases of burn injury care: burn shock, wound care/surgery, and rehabilitation/reconstruction.
Clinical expertise includes:
- Medical and surgical treatment-critical care, burn surgery and burn reconstruction
- Specialized nursing care with hydrotherapy, dressing changes, and fluid and pain management
- Rehabilitation with evaluation and specialized interventions such as therapeutic exercise, functional training, gait training, splinting, scar management, and patient education to improve patients' functional independence, mobility and cosmesis (prosthetic covering of the skin)
In addition, the Burn Center's New York Firefighters Hyperbaric Chamber is a specially built environment that delivers 100 percent oxygen under pressure to patients, helping to heal diabetic ulcers, radiation injuries, infections, damaged soft tissues and chronic non-healing wounds. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides injured tissues with extra oxygen to support the growth of new blood vessels that can replace those which have been damaged. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also used to reverse the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning that occurs during smoke inhalation by forcing the toxic gases out of the bloodstream and providing extra oxygen to help damaged tissues recover more rapidly. For wound infections, such as gas, gangrene, or bone infections, this treatment augments the body's ability to kill bacteria.
