Research Highlights

Our physicians play key roles in research studies, including clinical trials, to enhance treatment options for obesity. NewYork-Presbyterian is one of only six centers across the country selected by the National Institutes of Health to take part in a multimillion dollar Bariatric Surgery Clinical Research Consortium, which is conducting a groundbreaking, five-year Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery study. Other studies pursued by our physicians focus on:

  • Gene Expression and Metabolic Profile of Weight Loss: Studies of Patients Following Gastric Bypass Surgery
A longitudinal study of obese patients who unerwent gastric bypass surgery, which includes monitoring of changes in gene expression and metabolic changes from resulting weight loss over 18 months.
  • Bariatric Surgery and its Effects on Bone Metabolism
Studies of bone health in patients prior to and at intervals following bariatric procedures.
  • Pilot Study of the Effect of Bariatric Surgery on Parameters of Reproductive Function in Obese Women
  • Body Composition and Resting Energy Expenditure in Responses to Bariatric Surgeries
Studies prior to and following bariatric procedures of body composition including measurements of total intracellular and extracellular body water, skeletal muscle mass, organ sizes, and bone mineral content.
  • Characterization of Hyperparathyroidism and Vitamin D Deficiency in Obesity
