The Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation section at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center provides our patients with two state-of-the-art surgical services:

Hepatobiliary surgery is the treatment of malignant and benign lesions of the liver, pancreas and biliary system.

This includes cancers that develop primarily in these organs (e.g. primary liver cancer, bile duct cancer), or metastasize from other areas of the body (e.g. cancer of the colon and rectum). The main surgical procedure is partial liver resection, also called hepatectomy, based upon the unique feature of the liver to regenerate. Dr Cherqui pioneered laparoscopic liver resection for selected liver tumors. Minimally-invasive liver resection is a unique treatment option that we now offer to our patients. We also contributed innovative techniques for major liver resections requiring open abdominal surgery.

Liver transplantation involves replacement of a diseased liver with a healthy liver and the long-term follow-up of these patients after transplantation. This program expands New York-Presbyterian Hospital's renowned Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation and provides this vital service to more patients needing liver transplantation. Additionally, we have introduced innovations with minimally invasive techniques for living donor liver transplantation. In some conditions, patients may require both hepatobiliary surgical procedures and later liver transplantation. By providing both services we offer greater continuity of care under such circumstances.

Both focuses require an expert and personalized approach to each patient's liver disease. Our objective is to provide our patients with the highest level medical care whether or not they require an operation. To this end, our team of experienced surgeons collaborate with doctors from hepatology, gastroenterology, oncology, radiology, pathology and anesthesiology all focused on the treatment of liver disease. Individualized treatment plans are formulated during multidisciplinary conferences where each patient's case is thoroughly reviewed and discussed to determine the best available options in order to maximize survival and quality of life.
