Surgery Training and Education

Weill Cornell Medical College surgical training program is nationally-recognized as one of the best training programs in the country, and encompasses both residency and fellowship programs.

Residency

The Weill Cornell Medical College/New-York Presbyterian Hospital residency program in General Surgery is a classical, five-year clinical training program, and is recognized as one of the best programs in the country. The residency program accepts 26 first year surgical residents, eight of whom are accepted for the entire five year non-pyramidal program in general surgery.

In addition to our general surgery residency, the department offers residencies in the following areas:

  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: The Combined Divisions of Plastic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital offer a fully ACGME-accredited Independent Plastic Surgery. One categorical resident is accepted for the three-year independent residency program in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery.
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry: There are three residency programs in oral and maxillofacial surgery and dentistry for 19 residents; these programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

Fellowships

Several divisions and sections within the Department of Surgery have additional fellowship programs providing specialized surgical training.

  • The section of Burn Surgery offers two, one-year fellowships each year. A major contributor to advances in burn treatment research and education, over 50 residents from general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery do a Burn Surgery rotation each year.
  • The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery accepts one candidate per year at the PGY-6 level. The program encompasses the clinical, educational, and research aspects of the full range of diseases related to the large and small intestine.
